What will be studied?
- Students will learn the essential knowledge and understanding for child development, covering reproduction, parental responsibility, antenatal care, birth, postnatal checks, care, conditions for development, childhood illnesses and child safety.
- Students will gain knowledge of the equipment needs of babies and young children and an understanding of the factors to be considered when choosing appropriate equipment to meet all of these needs. They will also gain knowledge of nutrition and hygiene practices and will be given the opportunity to evaluate dietary choices.
- Students will gain knowledge of, and skills in, developing activities to observe development norms in children up t the age of five. This unit will include researching, planning, carrying out activities with children and observing and reviewing these activities, as well as an understanding of the development norms and the benefits of play in child development.
Who will this course suit?
Students who have an interest in working in a child care or education setting will be best suited to this course. Not only will students look at the physical and emotional development of a child, they will investigate the role of education and how it helps children develop.
This course has a mix of coursework, which is assessed through portfolios, and an exam which meets the needs of different learning styles.

How is the course assessed?
This qualification is split into three units.
Unit 1: Health and well-being for child development – Written paper (50%)
Students will sit a 1 hour 15 minute exam.
Unit 2: Understanding the equipment and nutritional needs of children from birth to five years – Centre assessed tasks (25%)
Students will produce a portfolio of work that will be internally assessed and externally moderated.
Unit 3: Understanding the development of a child from birth to five years – Centre assessed tasks (25%)
Students will study a child and will produce a portfolio work that will be internally assessed and externally moderated. Student must have access to a child five and under.
What will this qualification lead to?
This qualification will help students develop a sound understanding of the Child Development and Learning industry and develop valuable skills to secure progression for further study and employment in this sector.
