Letter for Year 11 and Year 13

Dear Parents and Carers of students in Year 11 and 13,

I hope this letter finds you and your families well. I wanted to begin by letting you know how impressed we have been with the attitude and commitment our exam groups have shown in their studies. This has been a period of particular uncertainty for them yet they have responded with resilience and maturity.

Students are clearly working hard completing coursework, NEA’s, tests and assessments in order to provide teaching staff with all the evidence they will need to award them the grades that reflect their ability this summer. Mrs French will be writing to you again shortly to update you on this process. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to email (kfrench@bidefordcollege.org) if you have any queries.

This period of assessment and evidence collation ends on Friday 28th May to allow time for moderation and standardisation processes. This will also see the suspension of the normal timetable and after this date we will not require students in Year 11 to attend college. Year 13 students will not be required to attend college after the last day of their final assessment. However, it is important that they are still available to attend if requested as staff may need additional evidence from a student to support the awarding of a grade. Final results will be submitted to exam boards by 18th June and released to students on exam results days:

* AS/A Level & Level 3 BTEC – Tuesday 10th August
* GCSE – Thursday 12th August

There will be some assessments in the final week, but Mrs Jewell and Mrs French are working hard to include some celebrations (in a COVID secure way) to mark the end of their courses. This is in addition to the Proms which we are hoping will still be able to go ahead.

After half term there will be a number of transitional events for Year 11 students. Whilst optional, these events have been scheduled so that students can attend all of them if appropriate for their future careers.

* Monday 7th June to Friday 11th June: PETROC will be providing the opportunity for students to engage in taster activities. This will then enable them to find out more about the courses on offer, meet the lecturers and explore their Barnstaple campus. We will send more details when it is available although the Advice & Guidance team on 01271 338125 at PETROC are available for additional support and information.

* Monday 21st June to Friday 25th June: Bideford College Sixth Form induction week. This will include a range of events including taster lessons, tours, meet the staff and a Parents Information Evening.

* From Monday 28th June: New Bideford College Sixth Form students will be provided with online work to complete in preparation for the start of their A-levels

* Monday 12th July to Friday 23rd July: Bideford College Sixth Form Face to Face preparation for Sixth Form lessons

Finally, can I thank you for your ongoing support which has been essential in helping the year 11 and 13 students overcome challenges that no one could have anticipated. They are a credit to you, the college and the Bideford community.

Dr C Ankers
