Letter for Parents and Carers

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope this letter finds you well and you are enjoying this prolonged spell of good weather. It has been good to see the students enjoying the outside spaces this week in PE and breaktimes, despite being still restricted to their designated areas of the college. As the national restrictions ease we are starting to plan how, when we are advised to do so, we can start to allow students to move around the college a little more freely and access the specialised curriculum areas. Similarly, we are hoping that some of the activities that we traditionally do in the summer can go ahead. Sports Day has been pencilled in for later in the term and we hope to welcome our new year 6 for some transition events in July. I look forward to writing to you to confirm these dates at a later time.

In preparation for next year, Mrs Jewell and I have been meeting our year 6 remotely again this week. Joining students in their primary school classrooms gives us a great opportunity to introduce ourselves as well as answering the many questions our new students have about life at Bideford College. I have also met with James Craigie this week to discuss how our students can have a more active role in the Bideford Town Council. I am hoping this will give our students lots of opportunities to develop their leadership skills in the future.

Next week is our Year 8 parents’ evening, which will be happening remotely with subject teachers. Please book your appointments via our website or contact the college if you need support with this. This new way of operating parent consultation events is something we will be seeking your opinion on shortly as we evaluate the strategies we had to put in place as a result of the pandemic. Whilst we are all desperate to return to a normal running college, it will be a good opportunity to reflect on the new ways of working we have had to adopt.

On behalf of all the staff at the college I would like to take the opportunity to wish you a restful bank holiday. We look forward to welcoming all our students back on Tuesday.
