What will be studied?
This is a Level 2 technical award designed to be practical and focused on developing the core skills needed to design and make textile products. It is equivalent to a GCSE qualification. Students will also develop an understanding of the working properties of materials and commercial and industrial practices within the fashion industry.
In Year 10 students will complete Unit 1 which involves the completion of a range of small skills based projects and producing a portfolio. In Year 11 they will complete Unit 2 which involves following a brief to make a final outcome. A range of topics will be studied including:
- Surface decoration
- Fabric Manipulation
- Joining Fabrics
- Applying fastenings and components
- Inserting collars, sleeves and pockets
- How to use a commercial pattern
- Fashion drawing skills
- Team working skills
Who will this course suit?
Students choosing the course should enjoy creating and making textile products. They should have an eye for detail and enjoy sewing.

How is the course assessed?
This course is assessed by three components:
Unit 1: Students are assessed on the production of 3 to 4 skill based projects and portfolios. This is worth 30%.
Unit 2: Students complete an extended project. This is worth 30%.
Unit 3: Students complete a two part exam. The first part is comprised of multiple choice questions, the second section involves written answers. It is worth 40% of the final qualification.
What will this qualification lead to?
The Textile industry is one of the biggest growth areas for jobs in the UK. There is becoming a real shortage of creative people as well as skilled workers in manufacturing. This course will allow you to develop the necessary core skills to work in the textile industry. As well as this it will also provide you with the confidence and skills to take on your own personal projects at home. Students will be able to continue their studies in the Sixth Form where we offer a Fashion and Textiles A-level. In addition this course will provide an excellent foundation for individuals wanting to pursue a range of careers in the textiles industry such as fabric technologist, fashion buyer, fashion marketing, fashion designer, interior designer, costume designer, sportswear designer, colour chemist and fashion journalism.
