Dear Parents and Carers,

Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope you have had an enjoyable week and this letter finds you well. It has been good to have a ‘normal’ week at the college with students in lessons and most clubs restarting after the Christmas break. This week we have welcomed our Youth MP for Torridge, Maisie Frost, who has led our morning assemblies. This is a really good opportunity for students to learn about democracy and how they will be able to take part in the Devon Youth Parliamentary elections later this year.

On Wednesday night we received an update from the Department for Education on the wearing of facial coverings in schools and colleges. It is now no longer recommended that these are worn in lessons. They do, however, still need to be worn in corridors and communal areas until Thursday 27th January. Students and staff can, of course, continue to wear them after this date if they wish. I am, however, monitoring the number of cases in the college carefully and may, under the advice of Public Health England reintroduce them if it is felt necessary. Sadly, the number of students and staff self-isolating due to COVID-19 is increasing and this may be needed to ensure the ongoing provision of face to face education. Another important strategy is the twice weekly testing of students at home. Can I thank you for your ongoing support with this and if you require any further information please contact Mrs Jewell (ajewell@bidefordcollege.org).

The college is working hard to ensure that students are fully prepared for their next steps in education or employment by growing the careers advice and guidance that we are able to offer. Mrs Woodhall and Mr Hardy are developing links with local and national employers who are supporting us in the development of our careers hub. Please see our website and social media pages for more details on the range of activities, seminars and trips that we are now able to offer our students.

This week I had the pleasure of awarding students who have just completed their Duke of Edinburgh silver and bronze awards with their certificates. These young people have demonstrated amazing resilience in completing these prestigious qualifications, despite the constant disruption caused by the pandemic.
I would like to wish you and your families an enjoyable and relaxing weekend.

Best wishes

Dr Ankers
